Various Symptoms of Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus infections can range from mild to severe. While a mild infection can be successfully treated with home remedies, it is important to monitor your infection to make sure it isn’t spreading. A severe fungal infection can lead to amputation. A minor toenail infection may have the following symptoms:

  • White lines or spots on the surface of the nail
  • Nails become brittle
  • A slight thickening of the nail may occur
  • The surface of the nail may also become powdery or soft

Tea tree oil is a recommended treatment for mild toenail fungus. If this fails to curb the infection and it becomes more advanced, you may notice the nail lifting away from the nail bed, along with the following symptoms:

  • Severe discoloration, usually brown, gray or yellow
  • Pronounced ridges in the toenail
  • Extreme thickening of the nail
  • Skin around the nail will look scaly or powdery
  • Horrible odor
  • Pain from wearing shoes, walking or standing

People who have diabetes, a compromised immune system, nerve damage or poor circulation are at greater risk of developing fungal infections in the toenails. Possible consequences of leaving a toenail fungal infection untreated include:

  • Surgical removal of the nail
  • Spreading of the fungus to other parts of the body
  • Blood poisoning can occur if the infection makes it into your bloodstream, which can be a life threatening event
  • Amputation of toes and feet
