Why Do My Arches Hurt?

arch pain

Arch pain has a variety of causes. Sometimes the pain radiates to other areas of the foot such as the heel in the condition called plantar fasciitis. Arch pain can get worse after strenuous activity or it can develop slowly after many hours of hard training, work, stress, and pressure on the feet.

It can be difficult to pinpoint the actual cause of arch problems. Your best step is to see your podiatrist for a complete foot exam and a computerized gait analysis to determine your foot type and how best to treat your arch problems. Correcting problems with your arches can also correct knee, back, and hip misalignments.

Arch pain can be caused by the following issues:

  • Stress fractures
  • Tendon, ligament, and muscle strain
  • Structural abnormalities
  • Various types of arthritis
  • Repetitive stress
  • Damage from accident or injury
  • Muscle cramps

Some of the treatments for arch pain include the following:

  • Resting and icing—Resting your foot and applying an ice pack several times a day to the arch will decrease swelling and pain. Ibuprofen or Tylenol will also reduce symptoms. Elevating your foot while resting is also recommended.
  • Custom orthoticsUsing orthotic inserts that are made to precisely fit your foot will support the arch and correct pronation problems.
  • The right footwear—Make certain you wear the correct shoe for the activity you are participating in. Wearing running shoes on the tennis court is just asking for trouble.
  • Switch to lower impact activities—Arch pain can be relieved by switching from high impact activities to cycling, swimming, and weight lifting.
