Exercise Your Feet!

Your feet contain a huge number of bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles. Exercising and stretching your feet and ankles is a great way to keep them in shape and to avoid injury.

Keep your feet flexible and free of pain with some of these fun and effective methods:

  • Roll a golf ball under your foot: This works great for foot cramping, arch pain relief, and plantar fasciitis pain relief. From a seated position, roll a golf ball under your foot for several minutes. You can rise up and put a little weight on your foot for a deeper effect.
  • Toe flexing: While sitting down, wrap a large rubber band around your left toes. Flex your toes open and closed, holding for about five seconds each. Do ten reps. Repeat this procedure for your other foot. This is a good treatment for
  • Walk on the sand: Walking barefoot on the beach is an excellent resistance exercise for strengthening the feet and ankles.
  • Pick up marbles with your toes: Put a bunch of marbles on the floor and, from a seated position, pick up each of the marbles with your toes and drop them in a box. Repeat with your other foot. This a great exercise for treating hammertoes and metatarsal area pain.
  • Raise, point, and curl your toes: Try these exercises for the treatment of plantar fasciitis and shin splints. While sitting, place your feet flat on the floor and raise them up onto the balls of your feet. Hold this position for 5-10 seconds. Next, rise further, and move on to the tip of your toes and hold again for five seconds or so. Now, allow your feet to come back down to a flat position and then curl your toes under and hold for about five seconds. Repeat.

4 Foot Disorders Common in Kids

If your child is suffering from foot or ankle pain, you may need to do a little sleuthing to determine what the problem is since kids frequently can’t fully communicate their symptoms. If your child exhibits behaviors such as walking on tiptoes, limping, or some other unusual sign, a foot or ankle problem may be the cause. Any pain or discomfort that persists for more than a few days should be evaluated by your foot doctor.

Here are four of the most common children’s foot conditions:

  1. Ingrown Toenails A nail curving down and growing back into the skin is quite painful and if it has broken through the skin can actually become infected. Ingrown toenails are often caused by footwear or socks that are too tight. Not trimming nails straight across is another cause. Trying to dig the nail out yourself is risky. Proper evaluation and treatment by a foot specialist is the safest course.
  2. Plantar Warts are caused by the human papilloma virus and usually form on the bottom of the foot. These warts can grow deep into the skin and cause your child pain when walking or standing.
  3. Pediatric Flatfoot from a lack of arch support usually causes kids to have cramping in their feet, knees, or legs. However, this condition can sometimes occur with no symptoms, so it is important to pay attention to your child’s gait when running or playing sports to check for any awkward motion.
  4. Sever’s Disease is an inflammation of the growth plate on your child’s heel. Since the growth plate is not fully developed in children ages 8 to 14, sometimes the repetitive stress of sports and other activities can cause considerable pain, and these activities need to be avoided until the plate grows sufficiently.

Check your child’s feet regularly and if you see anything unusual or if your child is complaining of pain in the foot, ankle, heel or leg, make an appointment with your podiatrist right away.

Hammertoe Woe

The only toe not susceptible to bending into the shape of a hammer is the big toe. All the other toes can adopt this curious condition, which is a progressive deformity that will only worsen over time often causing additional problems in the process.

What is the Cause?

An imbalance between the muscle and the tendon in the toe is most often cited as the cause of hammertoe. This can be inherited, or caused by structural changes that occur over a long period of time. An injury can also cause a toe to become formed in this manner. It is best to treat hammertoes early while they still retain some flexibility. The more rigid they become, the more difficult they are to deal with.

Symptoms of Hammertoe

While the bent shape of the toe is an easily recognizable symptom, others may include:

  • Inflammation, burning, and redness
  • Pain when wearing shoes
  • Bunions are often seen in patients with hammertoes
  • Corns and calluses either on top of the toe or the ball of the foot or between the affected toe and the one next to it
  • Open cuts on the affected toe caused by rubbing inside the shoe

Hammertoe Treatments

Non-surgical treatments for hammertoe include the following:

  • Using padding or other orthotics to isolate the hammertoe
  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Splinting or strapping

When a hammertoe has become too rigid and painful for conservative treatment, surgery may be required to reposition the toe and realign the tendons. This can usually be performed on an outpatient basis.

Various Symptoms of Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus infections can range from mild to severe. While a mild infection can be successfully treated with home remedies, it is important to monitor your infection to make sure it isn’t spreading. A severe fungal infection can lead to amputation. A minor toenail infection may have the following symptoms:

  • White lines or spots on the surface of the nail
  • Nails become brittle
  • A slight thickening of the nail may occur
  • The surface of the nail may also become powdery or soft

Tea tree oil is a recommended treatment for mild toenail fungus. If this fails to curb the infection and it becomes more advanced, you may notice the nail lifting away from the nail bed, along with the following symptoms:

  • Severe discoloration, usually brown, gray or yellow
  • Pronounced ridges in the toenail
  • Extreme thickening of the nail
  • Skin around the nail will look scaly or powdery
  • Horrible odor
  • Pain from wearing shoes, walking or standing

People who have diabetes, a compromised immune system, nerve damage or poor circulation are at greater risk of developing fungal infections in the toenails. Possible consequences of leaving a toenail fungal infection untreated include:

  • Surgical removal of the nail
  • Spreading of the fungus to other parts of the body
  • Blood poisoning can occur if the infection makes it into your bloodstream, which can be a life threatening event
  • Amputation of toes and feet

If you are concerned that a foot fungal infection may be damaging your health, it is important to see a podiatrist for proper care.
